Tesco Clubcard Unpacked

Ireland’s Greatest Food Debates Solved!

Tesco Ireland Launches Clubcard Unpacked 2023

Milk was top of the shops last year, ranking #1, #2, #3 and #5 in the top five list of most purchased items in 2023, Barry’s beat Lyons in the eternal debate of which tea is most popular in Ireland and Heinz is the clear favourite of Chef in the brutal Ketchup wars!

These are just a few of the findings from Tesco Ireland as they reveal Clubcard Unpacked 2023. Much like the much anticipated Spotify Unwrapped, the Tesco version, Clubcard Unpacked delivers unique insights into the grocery shopping habits of the Irish consumer. And naturally media and consumer interest was equal, if not greater, than the Spotify incarnation!

The initiative enables Clubcard members to get a personalised look at their own shopping habits, as well as see how much they’ve saved in the past year. As part of this, Tesco revealed the top shopped items of 2023 and solved some age-old questions that have been heavily debated amongst families, friends, colleagues, and even strangers; in 2023, customers sipped their way through 2M boxes of tea bags. Although the perfect ‘cuppa’ traditionally brings families and friends together and solves all of life’s problems, heated discussions can ensue when the question is posed – Barry’s or Lyons? Barry’s came out on top, with over half of the country (56%) purchasing Barry’s tea bags during their shop, compared to 44% reaching for Lyons. In a reginal ‘deep-dive’, only three counties had a slight preference for Lyons (Donegal, Louth and Monaghan), while Cork, naturally, is Barry’s biggest fan, with 80% of the county choosing it over Lyons (20%) as their brew of choice.

Milk’s clean sweep at the top was ripe for the taking, with Tesco’s Ripe & Ready Avocado stealing the fourth top spot – a surprise item that knocked favourites such as Brennan’s Sliced Pan and Coca Cola Zero Sugar off the top 5 list.

It won’t come as a shock that the Irish public overwhelmingly chose Tayto over King (96% vs. 4%). We chomped our way through 11million bags of Cheese & Onion and Salt & Vinegar Crisps in 2023!
